The North Korean Mass Games Performed by 100,000 People

By Photographer Sam Gellman.

These are photos from a four day trip in North Korea - September 9-12, 2011. Our guides were great but also quite conscious of every step we took. So some of these images are more documentary than anything else.

It was an interesting four days though and a unique opportunity to see some sides of how a country separated from the rest of the world functions. While the propaganda was more than I expected, there were some moments, like bumper cars at a theme park with soldiers and their kids, that were good reminders that people are people are people, whether in North Korea, the US, Hong Kong or anywhere

Aurora seen from the ISS in Orbit

This gorgeous view of the aurora (above) was taken from the International Space Station as it crossed over the southern Indian Ocean on September 17, 2011. The sped-up movie spans the time period from 12:22 to 12:45 PM ET.

While aurora are often seen near the poles, this aurora appeared at lower latitudes due to a geomagnetic storm – the insertion of energy into Earth’s magnetic environment called the magnetosphere – caused by a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun that erupted on September 14, 2011. The storm was a moderate one, rated with what’s called a KP index of 6 on a scale that goes from 0 to 9, caused by just a glancing blow from the CME.

How are aurora generated?

As solar particles from an incoming CME move into Earth’s magnetosphere they travel around to its back side — or night side, since it is on the opposite side from the sun — along the magnetic field lines. When these magnetic field lines reconnect in an area known as the magnetotail, energy is released and it sends the particles down onto Earth’s poles, and sometimes even lower latitudes. As the particles bombard oxygen and nitrogen in the upper atmosphere, the atoms release a photon of light that we see as the beautiful colors of the aurora. [via NASA]

Mysterious Army of 100 Illuminated Radioactive Figures by Luzinterruptus

Luzinterruptus is an anonymous artistic group, who carries out urban interventions in public spaces. We use light as a raw material and the dark as our canvas.

The installation Radioactive Control was created for the Dockville Festival in de Hamburg which tried to demonstrate, in a humorous tone, the paranoia that we are suffering from since the escape of radioactive material in Japan, has brought into question the safety systems at the nuclear power plants.

With our mysterious army of 100 illuminated radioactive figures, which advanced threateningly on the natural environment of the festival, we wanted to invite reflection regarding the use and abuse of nuclear energy, cheap in economic terms, but which can cause grave secondary effects for the environment and health, forever irreversible.

1960s Drugs Identification Kit

The Dangerous Drugs—Identification Kit contains harmless facsimiles of the more commonly abused dangerous drugs. The Kit was designed to be used primarily as an instructional aid in educational and training programs directed toward combating the existing narcotics and dangerous drugs problem. It consists of a plastic container which is transparent and durable. Plainly visible within the container are facsimiles of amphetamines and barbituates, reproduced with exacting fidelity in terms of color, size, shape, and other distinguising characteristics.
